AI Contemplation - Part 2

Some more random thoughts about AI...

💡
For part 1, see the May, 2026 newsletter.

Continuing on with this subject, I've been thinking a lot about "artificial intelligence", as I am sure many of you have as well. Recently, an episode of Star Trek was playing: The Ultimate Computer. It's amazing how many parallels there are to AI today from a more than 50 year-old show (plus a great performance by William Marshall). Worth a watch if you have the time. A technology cautionary tale for sure.

As a result of the massive purchases made by the owners of AI data centers over the past year or so, prices for storage drives, RAM, and other devices have literally gone through the roof. For most people, it simply isn't feasible to buy any of these things or build a computer right now. That is a problem. I'll be discussing this more in the month of July.

Another problem: AI addiction. People who "talk" to AI bots far too much and ask questions about everything under the sun. Be careful my friends. This can have many negative consequences including: social isolation, weakened real-world (and real-people) communication skills, emotional dependence, and even AI psychosis. IMO, there should be a disclaimer under each AI conversation that says: Please use AI responsibly.

NEWS OF NOTE FOR JUNE, 2026

  • Linux Kernel 7.1 released: New native NTFS driver, Intel FRED, trimmed down code (more than 140K lines), phase-out of legacy 486 CPUs 😥, and 7.2 (due in Late August, 2026) is working heavily with networking devices (especially Wi-Fi) and will incorporate Intel USB4STREAM protocol. (Kernel 7.0 is EOL.)
  • Security Vulnerabilities: DirtyClone (Debian link), pedit COW (Debian link)
  • CachyOS: many updates. It's now been #1 on DistroWatch for a year. The kernel that they use is excellent for gaming and multimedia. I've been watching it carefully!
  • SparkyLinux: 2026.06 updates with Kernel 7.1 (It's a derivative of Debian Testing, very cutting edge)

Nonsensical AI Image of the Month

This is what Leonardo.ai (with Nano Banana) comes up with when combining Prometheus, Terraform, Linux, Battlestar Galactica and gremlins. This is quite possibly my dream apartment of the future. Alternatively, I'm thinking of exiting computers altogether and starting a handyman service: Dave's Old Dirt Truck. (Never was so good at titles...)

🙏
It's been said that it is "socially acceptable" to joke about tragedies after approximately 22 years. Here's one: PETS.COM. Went bankrupt in 2004 - a classic example of the dot-com bust of the time. The irony? Their core business model would have been massively successful today, but they were too early for the available technology of the day.
Add in Excite, WorldCom, and Global Crossing - all with multi-billion dollar valuations before their demise.

Note to self: Remember the past, and don't be fooled by the future.
(or the now)

As always, yours,
Dave
